What Do We Really Know About Our Natural Hair

Hey Natural Divas!

I was just thinking, “What Do We Really Know About Our Natural Hair?”  You hear all the time, “Know Your Hair”, “Read Product Labels”, It seems that we make it much harder than it needs to be when transitioning.  Some of us just jump in, some of us research until we have read it all, and some of us are more hands on (trial and error).  But, is there a better way to transition back to your natural hair?  Well I think that there is.

When you know your hair; its composition, what ingredients are in the products you purchase, your hair’s likes & dislikes, and how to make it really perk up and shine, you can better transition your hair back to its natural state.  Many times as women we have very good intentions, but we do not follow through.  In my opinion we do not follow through because of the tribulations that occur the majority of the time for transitioners.  What I mean by tribulations is those times when your hair is throwing a tantrum, when your natural hair is in the desert (dry), when that halo frizz will not go away, or when unfortunately your hair breaks off and you have to Big Chop anyway.

So, I think more women should surely do research prior to going natural.  If we become aware of how our hair reacts to certain chemicals, certain oils, particular butters, and our hair texture we would be so much better off.  Then we have the junkies (PJs – Product Junkies).  Now, no matter what if you’re a PJ your just a PJ.  But, as a new natural you are automatically a PJ.  You are learning your hair and don’t know exactly how to deal with it.  But, that should not be the dilemma that is, because if we know our hair first then we can move past this stage without going broke or even breaking a sweat.

I have put together a little information in the form of websites and books that can help with transitioning, BCing, and moving into the 100% natural stage.  Yes, even when you BC you are a brand new natural!  You are a transitioner when you are moving from relaxed to natural, remember?  Anywho,  these are some great books that can help you along the way.

Curly Girl Techniques That We Should All Familiarize Ourselves With

Hey Natural Divas!

After a successful INHMD event, I really learned that many naturals out there are walking in the dark.  What I mean is that they are unaware of certain methods or techniques for naturals out there.  Now all techniques  are not for every natural.  So, I was looking around and found some that are of particular importance to us Curly Girls out there.  So here goes!

1) The Pineapple!

The name comes from the way the green spines sit on top of a pineapple.  When done correctly your hair should be on top of your head using a loose silk scrunchie or ouchelss band to secure the hair in place overnight.  This is a method that is important when you want to retain length.  In addition to helping curly girls keep those long coils it can also help with keeping curls full of life.  After a few days of wearing a curly style, pineappling can help to elongate curls as well.  Don’t forget, you still need to wear your satin bonnet, scarf, or sleep on your satin pillow case.

2) Plopping !

Plopping is method that is used to create more defined curls.  Major frizz usually stems from touching your hair when wet and/or without product.  When plopping you should use a microfiber towel or the usual t-shirt to help in decreasing frizz and can also help hair to dry faster.  There are also products out there such as the Curl Ease Towel that help with frizz.

3) Finger Coiling

Finger coiling is a technique that allows you to wear a curly style formed by twirling hair around your finger.  Finger coiling can be used when you are having those bad hair days.  When finger coiling you should use a cream (preferably heavy) or gel.  In order to finger coil, complete your usual cleansing method and apply your leave in conditioner.  You hair will clump up the more you rake it and smooth the gel.  Next you want to coil sections of hair around your finger and hold for around 10 seconds.  This will make the section of hair take a more defined curl pattern depending on your hair.  You would just keep doing this until you have completely coiled your entire head.

4)  Scrunching Out Crunch

Have you ever had that crunchy hair feel before?  Well there is a way to get rid of it.  Give your curls that bounce back.  If you have crunchy hair you may have used a strong gel or did not scrunch out the crunch.  When your hair has dried completely, just take a small amount of light oil and rub it in your palm, then squeeze sections of your hair.  Scrunch hair while bending over so that you can create volume.  Just keep doing this all over your head until your hair is no longer crunchy.

These are a few curly girl techniques that can help you to get through the day or week.  It is never too late to learn new things about your natural hair.  So, put these techniques to memory and keep those curls happy!

Hairfinity Challenge & Giveaway

Hello Natural Divas!

Well, now that I have wrapped up INHMD, things are getting back to normal.  Which means that I will be back to blogging.  The very first blog post that I would like to do is for Hairfinity.  If you have been keeping up with the blog, then you know that I said to stay tuned for a Hairfinity Challenge.  The time is now and I am ready.

Hairfinity is a Dietary Supplement that is intended to promote faster growing, longer, and stronger hair.  Brock Beauty, the company that makes Hairfinity Daily Supplements, is out of the Louisiana area and makes other natural hair products such as Essentious.

I know the first thing that you want to know is what is in them?  Well, Hairfinity contains vitamins A, C. D3, B1, B2, B12, B6, B3, Calcium, Biotin, MSM, Folic Acid, Collagen, Horsetail, and Pantothenic Acid.  As you can see from the ingredients, these supplements pretty much contain all of what you would see in a regular daily multi-vitamin.  The exception here is that there are higher dosages of Biotin.  We all know that Biotin promotes healthy hair growth.  Many naturals purchase Biotin Supplements that they take to help with hair growth.  These daily supplements come in a bottle with 60 tablets/pills in a clear capsule.  This is a 30-day supply of supplements that you will take  twice per day at the time you determine.  The supplements can be purchased for around $24.99 – $25.00.  Brock Beauty normally has some special or discount code every month.  If you have interest in purchasing these supplements you may want to search for a coupon code.

Now you ask, “What are the side effects?”  Well, since starting to take the pills on May 19th, I have experienced no side effects.  That does not mean that others have not.  Some have said that they broke out really bad.  But the majority of naturals who have taken these supplements have had not had any side effects.  The only thing that I will add is that you do need to increase your water intake with these supplements.  Because there are high concentrations of Biotin you do need to be sure to help your body in getting rid of the nutrients that it does not use.  As with anything that you ingest, you should speak to your physician first to make sure that it is okay for you take these supplements!

Now, you may be saying, “These are just a gimmick”.  I know that is what I said at first.  But, there are a number of loyal users out there that say that their hair has grown from 1/4″ to 1″ per month after taking these vitamins.  If you do not know, African-American hair growth is roughly 1/2″ per month give or take, based on individual hair care.  With that being said, these are not a magic pill.  You must still take care of your hair and follow some type of healthy hair regimen.  If not there will surely be no success in faster hair growth.

Here are a few user videos showing the hair growth that they experienced when taking Hairfinity.

Now, here is the big news!!   I am doing a Hairfinity Challenge.  I will be using Hairfinity for 3 months.  I will post videos monthly to show any increased hair growth with use of the supplements.  I will also give away 5 bottles of Hairfinity to 5 people.  All that you have to do is to send a video telling me your hair growth challenges and why you want to try Hairfinity.  The way this will work is that you will need to send videos to http://www.info@tresses-kinks-twists.net.  Please include Hairfinity giveaway in the subject, include your name, email, and address in the email as well.  The winners will be chosen as follows:

1 – Winner on June 19th, 2013

2 – Winners on July 19th, 2013

2 – Winners on August 19th, 2013

The days that winners will be announced are also the days that I will post length check videos.   Please be aware that these supplements are not guaranteed to make your hair grow faster.  Other factors should be considered when taking these vitamins such as, natural hair maintenance, and genetics.  Remember, please check with your doctor before taking supplements.

Good Luck!!!

INHMD Success

Natural Divas!

How you doing?  (In my Wendy Williams Voice).  Sorry that I had not posted for several days.  But, I was busy with setting up, hosting, and managing an awesome event called International Natural Hair Meet-Up Day here in Austin, Texas.  If you did not know, this event was created by Adeea Rogers, the Trendy Socialite.  She is a force to be reckoned with and just a great inspiration to us all.

The event here in Austin was held this past Saturday, May 18th, 2013, at the Westin at the Domain.  Tickets were sold out by Monday, prior to the event.  We had tons of giveaways, great guest speakers, and a lot of good natural hair conversation.  There were a ton of beautiful natural hair styles and I even did my Big Chop at the event.  With that being said, I will go ahead and put it put there.  I did not have much to chop because I had been transitioning for a little over 7 months.  It was still my Big Chop, because I am now 100% natural as of May 18th, 2013.

It was a wonderful experience hosting this great event.  That does not meant that it wasn’t stressful.  But, if asked I would do it again.  I will do it again locally sometime in the Fall for all those Austin naturals that missed out on INHMD or who are looking for good information and some inspiration.

Check out our wrap up video for the event and the video posted by Naturally Curly.com on our event here in Austin.  Please don’t forget to leave your comments or ask questions.

Hairfinity Hair Vitamin Challenge? Stay tuned!

Hey Natural Divas!

I just wanted to update you on an upcoming challenge!  I know that a lot of naturals out there have problems with getting their hair to grow and other just want to have faster hair growth.  If you are a subscriber to this blog, you know that I feel that your hair will grow on it own in due time.

I have done some research for you and looked into a hair vitamin called Hairfinity.

Grow Longer Stronger Hair

If you have not heard of it, it is made by a company called Brock Beauty based out Louisiana. Hairfinity vitamins are supplements that include the nutrients necessary to stimulate hair growth.  The nutrients that can be found in these hair vitamins include:

Biotin promotes healthy hair growth and protects against dryness. Increases the elasticity of the hair’s cortex, thus preventing breakage. Helps produce keratin that prevents hair loss.

Niacin (Vitamin B3)

Niacin promotes scalp circulation Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) – prevents hair loss.

Vitamin A
Vitamin A is an antioxidant that helps produce healthy sebum in the scalp.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps maintain hair and skin health.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D helps prevent hair shedding which is critical to a voluminous fuller head of hair.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is essential to the formation of healthy red blood cells and helps transport oxygen to the scalp and follicles, which is required to sustain hair growth.

Vitamin B Complex

Vitamin B Complex nourishes and supports a healthy scalp environment and healthy hair growth. Deficiencies in these vitamins can lead to hair thinning, hair loss, graying, and weakening of the hair structure.

Due to its ability to maintain collagen, Silica helps maintain the hair’s elasticity and helps keep the hair lustrous.

The sulfur provided by MSM is required for healthy collagen and keratin, which are essential to healthy hair growth.

The company also makes products called Essentious.

The Essentious products include a Exonerate Gentle Shampoo, Hydrate Moisture Conditioning Treatment, and Rejuvinate Protein Strengthening Treatment.  All of these products are Aloe Vera based, free of Sulfates, Silicones, Mineral Oil, Petroleum, and Parabens and are pH-balanced.

Tresses Kinks & Twists Natural Hair product boutique is working with Brock Beauty to bring these products to you in our online store.  Stay tuned!

Look for the announcement on the Hairfinity challenge coming soon!

*Rules and instruction on how to enter the challenge to win Hairfinity Hair Vitamins will be provided on the day of the announcement.

Friday Music Selection of the Day

Hello Naturalistas!

I will be starting a Friday Music Selection of the Day every week!  I have a daughter who is in the Navy and in San Diego, California (she is the one in the middle of all the guys).

I miss her much!  We have our music day weekly to talk about new songs that are good and some that are not so good.  I have not had the time to do that with her because she has been on the ship.  But I thought that I could share with my Natural Divas out there until we can get back on track.

So I heard Fantasia’s new song “Without Me” and it was pretty good!  The song features Kelly Rowland and Missy Elliot.  The beat was definitely well-chosen.  I understand that recently she has had some financial trouble and is attempting to make a come back.  How that will go is unknown.  But, I wish her the best of luck.  So check out the audio of the new track here.
