Jamaican Black Castor Oil

While experiencing what seems to me to be extreme dryness during my transition I have been looking for oils that I can use to maintain moisture in my hair.  As I see my natural curls come in I get excited about how my hair will look as I get closer and closer to having a full head of natural hair.  Trolling the internet again I began looking at the benefits of Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

Castor Oil has been used for over 4,000 years for medicinal purposes.  The bean itself is native to Eastern Africa and got to Jamaica through the slave trade.  Jamaican Black Castor oil is produced by manually roasting the Castor Beans and then grounding them.  The beans are heated and then the oil is distilled out of the crushed beans. The color of the oil can take on a black color due to the roasting of the beans.  Vitamin E and Omega 6 fatty acids can be found in Jamaican Black Castor Oil, it acts as a humectant to attract and lock in moisture.   The oil can also dissolve accumulated build-up from hair products or other sources in the pores of the scalp.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil can be used for all hair types, whether curly, kinky, or coily.  It helps to moisturize, thicken, strengthen, and help hair to grow at a faster rate.  It helps by increasing blood flow to the scalp and allowing necessary nutrients to reach the follicle.  It also aids in the prevention of breakage, dandruff, eczema, and dry itchy scalp.

The oil can be used in 5 ways:

To soften hair – Anyone else have that one piece or section of hair, usually toward the crown area, that just refuses to coil up like the rest of your hair? Well, after washing hair, apply the Jamaican Black Castor Oil to the unruly piece hair while it is still damp and before styling. A little goes a long way with this oil because of its sticky consistency, so don’t use too much! This is the emollient nature of Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

As a pre-poo deep conditioner – In the extremely dry winter months this oil can be used as a deep conditioner. Try mixing equal parts Jamaican Black Castor Oil with Unrefined Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil as a deep treatment before washing your hair. Massage your scalp to help break any buildup and promote circulation & moisture. Sit under a conditioning cap for 30 min and then wash hair as usual. This pre-poo process is an amazing detox and restoration for scalp as a whole.

A temple and edge balm – If you have trouble getting your edges to lay down you can use Jamaican Black Castor Oil to help in laying them down.  Apply a small amount to slightly damp hair and then cover with a silk scarf your hair will be slick and moisturized without using harsh gels.

Oil Cleansing Method – If you have trouble with pores and cleansing, you can use Jamaican Black Castor Oil to help in clearing out and tightening pores. The nutrients in the oil can help in improving the skin’s overall tone and texture. Additionally, the oil carries Vitamin E, known to gradually heal blemishes, old scarring and rejuvenate the skin’s elasticity. Cleansing your skin, before bed, with Jamaican Black Castor Oil will reset your natural oil levels (for those who suffer from dry skin or oily skin), minimize acne problems and improve skin health as a whole.
