Natural Hair Acronyms

I know, you thought I was not going to talk about those acronyms that take you about 1 month to figure out what they are.  Well I didn’t.  Acronyms seem to control my life from work, cell phone use, and now my natural hair journey.  Are they important?  Well, they are as important to me, but if you are like me you want to be able to actively participate in a conversation with other natural sisters who actually know these acronyms.  So, I wanted to get the acronyms down myself and provide you with as many as I could find.  This list may or may not be complete but here it is.

Natural Hair Acronyms

2nd Day Hair – When your hair still looks good the day after you styled it and you can just mist it with water or whatever product that you use to refresh your style

ACV – Apple Cider Vinegar

APL – Arm Pit Length

AVG – Aloe Vera Gel

BAA – Big-ass Afro

BBBB – Burt Bees Body Butter

BSL – Bra Strap Length

BTW – By the way

C – Coarse Texture

CG – Curly Girl

CJ – Curl Junkie

Clarify – removing build up of products that you used from your hair with ACV, lemon juice, or shampooing

Clumping – strands of hair clumping together to form bigger, chunkier curls

CO – Conditioner or “conditioner only”

Co Wash – conditioner wash

CON – Cream of Nature

Condish – Conditioner

CV – Chagrin Valley

DH – Darling Husband

DT – Deep Treatment

EOs – Essential Oils

EVOO – Extra Virgin Olive Oil

F – Fine Texture

FSG – Flax Seed Gel

GDLI – Giovanni Direct Leave In

GVP – Generic Value Products

HG – Holy Grail

HTH – Hope that helps

IRL – In real life

ISO – In search of

ITA – In total agreement or I totally agree

M – Medium Texture Hair

MO – My Opinion

Pineapple – When you gather your hair on the top of your head using a scrunchie to preserve curls for a 2nd day style

PJ – Product Junkie

Plop – Method of wrapping wet hair in t-shirt

Poo – shampoo

PVP – a polymer found in many gels

Sally’s – Sally’s Beauty Supply

SAO – Sweet Almond Oil

Scrunch – Gently squeezing/pushing up hair from end to root.

SheaM – Shea Moisture Leave In

Shrinkage – shortening of length due to curl tightness

SL – Shoulder length

Term – terminal length – the longest length hair achieves due to shedding, not cutting

TJ – Trader Joe’s

TLBN – Tailbone Length

TR – Thermal Reconditioning

TTO – Tea Tree Oil

TWA – Teeny Weeny Afro

WO – Water Only Method

WSP – Wet Set pudding
